The dog never moved a muscle.

'Perro – isn't that an unusual name for a perro?' I suggested, breaking the silence. 'You know – a dog called Dog?'

'Unusual? Certainly not! I have had many perros, and I have called them all Perro. Simpler that way. Unusual? Mierda! Perro!' he yelled again, plucking the cigarette from his mouth in order to facilitate the production of maximum volume from his kippered vocal chords. 'PEE-RR-RR-O-O!' Nothing.

Pep bent down, picked up a sturdy stick and hurled it with all his might at the comatose dog. There was a hollow 'clonk' as the projectile hit Perro solidly on the top of his head. I feared for the animal's life, but the calent Perro only flicked one ear as if shaking off a fly, made a few contented clicking sounds with his tongue, and continued his siesta.
